Teaching and research activities in light of the impending lockdown

updated: 27.12.2020

Update from the Vice Rector

Due to the increase in numbers of Covid-19 cases, the Israeli government decided to impose a general lockdown beginning on Sunday, December 27th, 2020 at 5 pm.

In light of this decision, I would like to clarify that:

Teaching will continue in an online format using ZOOM, in the same manner as it has been conducted since the beginning of the semester.

Research labs will continue to operate under “purple tag” regulations.

Unfortunately, we will not be able to hold any frontal teaching activities on campus during the lockdown.  As a result, teaching labs will be discontinued beginning on Monday, December 28, 2020 for the duration of two weeks.  Only those classes and practical training sessions conducted outside campus grounds would be permitted to continue.  The academic units will update their students on this matter and also as to the manner in which the participation requirement in teaching labs will be fulfilled later in the semester or even after it officially ends.

As of now, it seems that exams will be held according to the examination guidelines I sent to you early this week. I would like to clarify that even during lockdown we will be permitted to hold 10% of all exams on campus, while the rest will be given online.

Campus gates will be open to faculty members who wish to come and teach their online courses from campus.  Libraries will be closed and will operate courier circulation services as in previous lockdowns. Additionally, libraries will allow faculty members to teach using the quiet rooms allocated for this purpose.  Libraries will also permit students who lack adequate online access at home to take exams in the quiet rooms, as long as they schedule this ahead of time.

I hope that this will be the final lockdown and that, after it ends, we would be able to resume normal life on campus-gradually and according to regulations-- allowing all  members of the university community- students, faculty, and staff, to go back to teaching, research, and, of course, learning.

With wishes for good health,

Prof. Eyal Zisser

Vice Rector
