Latin American Friends Keep Tradition Alive
In a show of continued support for Tel Aviv University, Governors Miriam and Adolfo Smolarz, and their daughter Aida, hosted the annual festive luncheon in Punta del Este. Guests heard from TAU Professor Martin Kupiec, Director of the Laboratory of Molecular Microbiology and Biotechnology and President of the Israel Society of Genetics, who spoke on the latest research in Life Sciences at TAU. Also attending the event were TAU Governors and supporters of the various Latin American Friends Associations, former President of Uruguay Dr. Luis Alberto Lacalle de Herrera, and his son, Uruguayan senator Dr. Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou. Both praised "the State of Israel and Tel Aviv University as models for Latin America to learn from and imitate."

TAU President Joseph Klafter and Argentinean Friends President Polly Deutsch de Mizrahi sent video greetings to the participants and thanked the Smolarz family for their generosity.
In a touching speech, Miriam Smolarz thanked the guests for attending in the "spirit of hope. For us hope – Hatikva – is not only a hymn; it is a symbol and longing for everything positive that can happen to us as individuals and as a people. I, as a woman of many yesterdays, wish TAU chazak v'amatz – strength and encouragement."
