Sagol School of Neuroscience

TAU researchers are exploring the inner workings of the brain and mind in the new Sagol School of Neuroscience

First-of-its-kind research institute in Israel
First of its kind in Israel
Major Achievements

Medicine: A new drug candidate discovered by Tel Aviv University researcher Prof. Illana Gozes may lead to an effective treatment against the debilitative Alzheimer's disease. This compound could also treat a number of diseases where patients suffer from cognitive deficits, such as schizophrenia and Parkinson's, by limiting damage to the brain.

Nanotechnology: Prof. Ehud Gazit and his team have developed a new molecule that could be the basis for cultivating a new drug to prevent muscular dystrophy.

Neurobiology: Prof. Daniel Michaelson and his team have discovered that individuals who possess a certain gene have a higher predisposition for developing Alzheimer’s disease.

Psychobiology: Prof. Talma Hendler has developed a new predictive tool for detecting post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among soldiers before symptoms appear.

Zoology: Prof. Amir Ayali is exploring ways of using the brain to control the flight of locusts, which could potentially be applied to drone technology.

Computer Sciences: Prof. Hezi Yeshurun is comparing the processing infrastructure of the human brain with that of a computer in order to develop artificial processing systems to replace damaged human ones.

"We are on the verge of a revolution in brain research. Scientists now realize that interdisciplinary dialogue is essential."

- Professor Uri Ashery, Department of Neurobiology, George S. Wise Faculty of Life Sciences.

Containing over 100 billion nerve cells connected to one another at over a trillion points, the human brain has amazed and astounded people throughout the ages. Understanding the human brain – how it functions normally, what makes it go astray, and how to make it right again – is one of the greatest challenges facing modern neuroscience. Millions of people suffer from abnormalities in the functioning of this network, leading to a range of devastating neurological and psychiatric brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia and depression. There is therefore a pressing need to unravel the mysteries of brain function and dysfunction and advance the treatment of brain disorders.

The Sagol School of Neuroscience: A Powerhouse in Brain Research and Discoveries

TAU’s Sagol School of Neuroscience is the first and only one of its kind in Israel in terms of interdisciplinary scope and breadth. The recently-established School serves as the coordinating framework for all TAU teaching and research in the brain sciences, integrating teams at the Faculties of Life Sciences, Medicine, Social Sciences, Exact Sciences and Engineering, as well as the Adams Center for Brain Studies. It is responding to the growing need for new teaching programs in innovative research areas that will stretch the frontiers of neuroscience in Israel and worldwide.

Home to the highly competitive Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program for Outstanding Students, the Sagol School of Neuroscience attracts top PhD candidates throughout the country and supports students’ innovative and original research ideas. The School also hosts the BSc Program for talented undergraduate students and a new MSc Program for multidisciplinary research and training. Dedicated in the name of visionary philanthropist and industrialist Mr. Sami Sagol, the School is committed to training Israel's leaders in the field.

TAU's Important Achievements in the Field

Tel Aviv University  is a recognized world leader in the study of brain science and neurodegenerative disease, with more drug candidates in the pipeline for Alzheimer’s disease than any other university in the world. With over 70 accomplished researchers and 17 affiliated medical centers, publications cited in top journals, and a regular presence at major international conferences, TAU is uniquely positioned to solve some of the most complex mysteries of the brain.
