TAU prof wins Argentinian award for work on climate change

Prof. Marcelo Sternberg from TAU's School of Molecular Cell Biology & Biotechnology at the George S. Wise Faculty of Life Sciences has won the RAICES award, the most prestigious award given by the government of Argentina to Argentinian scientists working abroad.

Prof. Sternberg studies the effects of climate change on ecosystems in Israel. His work in recent years has included studies of the decomposition of organic matter in the soil, the dynamics of a seed bank in soil, the development of roots and their influence on the success of plant invasion, the biology of invading fauna, the effects of fires and grazing on a variety of species.

Prof. Sternberg’s candidacy was submitted for the award by other Argentine scientists who have won this award in the past. Prof. Sternberg is the only Israeli to ever receive the award, which was given to him for his long-term cooperation with Argentinean scientists on climate change and the impact of grazing on natural ecosystems.

Prof. Sternberg will receive the award at a ceremony in Buenos Aires on November 20^th, 2018. It will be presented to him by a member of the Argentinian government, Minister Barañao.
