Tel Aviv University to Install Solar Panels Covering Thousands of Meters of Roofs Across Campus

The Management of Tel Aviv University recently decided to build solar roofs throughout the campus, with a price tag of about $2.5 million. The project will be spread over thousands of square meters, and should provide a significant amount of kilowatts of renewable energy for internal consumption on campus. Among other things, the university decided to place solar roofs over the buildings of TAU’s Sourasky Central Library, the School of Electrical Engineering, the Bob Shapell School of Social Work, The Buchmann Faculty of Law building, The David and Yolanda Katz Faculty of the Arts building and more.

The project was initiated two years ago as a pilot. Following its success, it has now been expanded to many additional buildings on campus. In about a year from today, the total roof space covered by solar panels on campus is expected to reach 13,000 square meters, positioning Tel Aviv University as a leader in the field among all academic institutions in Israel.

The program is part of a broader plan put in place by TAU’s Green Campus initiative. The green councili ncludes representatives of economic leaders, academic, administrative and students' representatives that will supervise implementation of sustainable projects on campus, and promotes diverse environmental-social activities, including the reduction of the campus' ecological footprint, reducing water consumption, utilizing air conditioner water to irrigate gardens, increasing garbage recycling, reducing the use of disposable tools across campus and a gradually transitioning to paperless administrative work.
